The short answer: a LinkedIn carousel is a document post. Export your slides as one PDF, click Start a post, open the + menu, choose Document, pick the file, give it a title and post. LinkedIn shows each page as a slide that people swipe through in the feed. The details below cover the phone app, LinkedIn Pages, the limits and what to do when an upload goes wrong.
What a LinkedIn carousel is today
LinkedIn had a native carousel format for a while. It launched in 2022, stopped accepting new carousels in June 2023, and on December 14, 2023 LinkedIn removed all of them; carousel ads were not affected. What people call a carousel now is a document post: a PDF (or a PowerPoint or Word file) whose pages readers swipe through right in the feed.
A post with several photos is not the same thing. LinkedIn lays out up to 20 photos as a grid, not as slides to swipe. If you want the swipe, upload a document.
Before you upload
- One file, one page per slide. LinkedIn accepts PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX, and recommends PDF for the best quality. One document per post.
- Every page the same size. LinkedIn's help asks for it: pages of different sizes have to be fitted to one size first. Portrait 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px) is the usual choice; see LinkedIn carousel size.
- Within the limits. Up to 100 MB and 300 pages. A carousel is rarely close to either, unless it is full of uncompressed photos.
- Nothing that moves. Videos and animations in the file show as still images.
- Nothing you would not hand out. People who can see the post can download the document as a PDF.
How to post a carousel on a computer
- On your LinkedIn home feed, click Start a post.
- Click the + icon for more options, then Document. (Older versions of the editor called it Add a document, under More.)
- Choose the PDF from your computer, or from Dropbox or Google Drive.
- Type a title for the document. It is required, and readers see it with the slides, so write it like a headline rather than a file name.
- Click Done, write the post text and click Post.
How to post a carousel from the LinkedIn app
- Tap Post.
- Tap the + icon and choose Document.
- Pick the PDF from your phone or from a cloud app. The cloud app has to be installed on the phone for its files to show up.
- Add the title, tap Next, write the post text and tap Post.
How to post a carousel from a LinkedIn Page
Company and showcase Pages can post documents too. Super admins and content admins open the Page, start a post from the Page's posts and upload the document the same way. You can also post documents in Groups.
Write the title and the post text for the swipe
The title sits with the document. LinkedIn's own guide to document posts suggests keeping it to 58 characters or less.
The post text can be up to 3,000 characters, but only the first lines show before “see more”. LinkedIn does not publish the exact cut-off; AuthoredUp measured it at roughly 210 characters on a computer and 140 on a phone. Use that space to say what the carousel gives the reader. Do not repeat the first slide word for word: the text and the slide should work together.
After you post
- You can edit the title and the text, not the file. To fix a slide, delete the post, export the PDF again and post it anew. Do it early, before the post collects comments.
- Check it on a phone. Swipe through once. If a line is hard to read there, it is too small or too long.
- Find it later on your profile, under Activity.
When something goes wrong
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The upload is refused | Over 100 MB or 300 pages, or a file type LinkedIn does not take | Export a PDF, compress large photos, cut pages |
| Slides jump or get bars as people swipe | Pages of different sizes | Export every page at the same size |
| Text looks soft or blurry | Slides exported small, or as low-quality images | Export at 1080 px wide or more |
| Fonts look different from your design | Fonts not embedded in the PDF, or a deck converted by LinkedIn | Export a PDF yourself instead of uploading the deck |
| An animation shows as a still frame | LinkedIn shows documents as static pages | Design every slide to work as a still |
Questions people ask
Can I schedule a carousel?
LinkedIn's help lists the post types you cannot schedule: events, jobs and services for members; multi-photo posts, polls and a few more for Pages. Documents are not on either list, so look for the clock icon in the post editor before you click Post.
Can I add more than one PDF to a post?
No. One document per post.
Is a carousel the same as a carousel ad?
No. Carousel ads are a paid format with 2 to 10 square image cards, each with its own headline and link. Organic carousels are document posts.
Making the PDF in cropdot
In cropdot you start from a topic, edit the slides and choose Export → Download PDF. Every page comes out 1080 px wide and the same size, ready for the steps above. For everything else about carousels, from size to structure, start with the complete guide to LinkedIn carousels.
