The short answer: click Start a post, open the + menu, choose Document, upload the PDF, give it a title and post. LinkedIn takes PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX files up to 100 MB and 300 pages, and shows every page in a viewer people can swipe or click through. A PDF designed slide by slide is what people call a LinkedIn carousel.
What you can post as a document
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| File types | PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX (PDF recommended for quality) |
| File size | Up to 100 MB |
| Length | Up to 300 pages |
| Per post | One document |
| Title | Required |
| Page sizes | One size for every page |
Post a PDF from a computer
- On your home feed, click Start a post.
- Click the + icon, then Document. In older versions of the editor it is More → Add a document.
- Click Choose file and pick the PDF from your computer, Dropbox or Google Drive.
- Type a title for the document and click Done.
- Write the post text and click Post.
Post a PDF from the LinkedIn app
- Tap Post, then the + icon, then Document.
- Pick the file from your phone or from a cloud app installed on the phone.
- Add a title, tap Next, write the text and tap Post.
Post a PDF as a LinkedIn Page or in a Group
Super admins and content admins of a Page can post text, images, videos and documents as the Page: open the Page, start a post from its posts and add the document. Documents can be shared in Groups the same way as on your own feed.
Before you upload
- Export a PDF yourself rather than uploading a deck or a Word file. You control how fonts and images come out.
- One page size. LinkedIn asks for pages of different sizes to be fitted to one size first.
- Flatten layered PDFs and expect videos and animations to show as still images.
- Assume it will be downloaded. Anyone who can see the post can download the document as a PDF, so remove anything private.
- Check the first page. It is the page people see first, and LinkedIn's own guide to documents advises a clear cover. Make it a headline, not a logo and a date.
A PDF report or a carousel?
The upload is the same; what changes is the design. A report or a resume is made of A4 or Letter pages full of text, which are hard to read on a phone. A carousel is made for the feed: portrait pages, one idea per page, large type. If you want people to read the document in the feed rather than download it, design it as a carousel. Start with the right size and a structure that earns the swipe.
After you post
- You can edit the title and the post text. You cannot replace the file: delete the post and upload the corrected PDF as a new one.
- Your uploaded documents stay on your profile, under Activity.
Questions people ask
Can people download my PDF?
Yes. LinkedIn lets members who can see the post download the document as a PDF. Its help pages do not mention a setting to turn this off.
Can I post a PowerPoint without converting it?
Yes, PPT and PPTX are accepted. LinkedIn still recommends converting to PDF for the best quality, and a PDF keeps your fonts as you set them.
Can I promote a PDF as an ad?
Yes. Document ads are a separate paid format. They can hide part of the document behind a lead form, and links in the document work only after it is downloaded.
Why does my PDF upload fail?
The usual reasons are a file over 100 MB, more than 300 pages, or an unsupported file type. Large photos are the most common cause of a heavy PDF; compress them and export again.
Making a carousel PDF in cropdot
cropdot drafts the slides from a topic and exports them with Export → Download PDF: one page per slide, 1080 px wide, every page the same size. Step-by-step posting is in how to post a carousel on LinkedIn.
